Day One. Dry Creek PD Investigations Building. Dry Creek, Arizona.

Monday, 1812 hours. 61 Hours Missing.

Detective Alex Landon sat in his cubicle while awaiting the results of his Emergency Electronics Locate Order on Michael Wilson’s cell phone. He used the brief downtime to consider how he could best deploy his available resources once they had some idea about Wilson’s location. Hard to sit here and wait for the next step, knowing that Princess Peralta’s probably suffering at this very moment. We’re so short-handed that I almost wish Jones was around today. I can’t trust him when he’s outta sight, but I can use another shooter with arrest authority. Even the devil has his uses. Gonna be hard, though, to give that asshole any benefit of the doubt once I really start digging into his private life.

Alex sat up straight and turned to look where he heard the familiar sound of a closing office door. To his surprise, and ironic gratitude, Detective Sergeant Bernie Jones stood and faced the closed door to his private office and used a high-tech three-dimensional pin-and-dot key to lock its deadbolt. “Jones,” Alex exclaimed, and realized how surprised and enthusiastic he felt. “I hope you’re not takin’ off. We can really use your help, Sarge.”

“You’re still working on that runaway,” Jones asked with some surprise evident in his voice.

“Yeah, but we got nothing to show she’s a runaway. Looks like Michael Wilson grabbed her at the Pavilions and has her held somewhere.

“What evidence you gotta that?”

Alex recognized his boss’ familiar skepticism and prepared to be verbally accosted for shitty work, or unrealistic evidence interpretation, or whatever new phrasing the man chose to try to beat down his work product and confidence today. How has he been this out-of-touch today, not to even know Wilson grabbed the girl and tried to blow us the hell up?? “Well, first, her mom said the girl was supposed to meet friends at the Pavilions for lunch, then never came home. Friends say no such plans ever existed. We pinged the girl’s phone, and it showed a historical location at the mall on Saturday, as well as an active location this morning. Recovered the phone from a trash can on the west side of the interior walkway. Surveillance footage from Saturday morning showed Michael Wilson pulling the girl along and dumping her phone in the same trash can where we found it. Tried to run him down at his last known, but he lied to his grandma and never stayed there after he got paroled. Grandma and his brother said he kept a place up the street, so we checked that place out, and narrowly avoided a backdraft.”

“A what?”

Alex cleared his throat and subconsciously rubbed his left forearm, which still ached from landing on the sidewalk after the explosion. “A backdraft, they torched the interior of a bomb shelter they were living in, but closed it up after the fire was good ‘n hot. Burned off all the oxygen until the wood
